Ford Fusion getting refresh for 2016

Does the Ford Fusion really need a refresh? Short answer: yes.

The design of the current Fusion raised the bar for midsize sedans, but that was a couple of years ago. The 2016 model year (likely beginning in the 2015 calendar year) will be an interesting crossroads. Domestically, Chrysler’s new 200 will be carving up the market, and Chevrolet will have a new Malibu ready. The international brands will include an upgraded Passat and the Altima will carry more radical sheetmetal.

By this time Ford’s sedan with the Aston Martin styling will be looking a bit dated…not because it is out of step with modern times, but simply because anything that’s been around for a few years in this industry is considered old.

Plus, in 2015 (2016 model year), there are going to be many leased Fusions returning to dealers. Even if customers like their cars, it will be a good idea to have something slightly different to show them.  That way it feels like Ford has made some developments in the 36 months since the customers have visited the car lot.

All these pictures tell us is that Ford is working on something new with the Fusion. It could be a new engine, it could be a mild refresh to the front end, or it could be both. There are no shots of the rear because it was exposed and looked just like every other current production model.

In the end, these shots bring more questions than answers. What they do confirm is that there are some changes coming soon to the Fusion. Let’s just hope Ford can make it modern without jeopardizing the good looks that stunned us all a few years ago.

SPECIAL THANKS TO LONESTAR FOR THE TIP!
